ASK Me

Calling on all faculty and staff to be part of our Welcome to York Campaign!

Just a few of our friendly staff and student ASK Me Ambassadors

What is the ASK Me program?

The ASK Me Program is designed to support incoming and returning students with their York University transition at the start of each semester - September, January, and May. If students have questions, we’re here to answer!

What’s involved with being an ASK Me Ambassador?

A new student's first weeks on campus are transformative and will set the course for their years ahead. By simply being a friendly face who points out a building or helps identify a course code, you'll be making a huge difference! This is why we are asking faculty, staff and upper-year students to sign up to be an ASK Me Ambassador and help us welcome returning and incoming students.

What are the two ways to volunteer?

1. Volunteer to wear an ASK Me lanyard!

Show your York pride by wearing an ASK Me lanyard around campus and support students while you’re heading to a meeting, grabbing lunch, commuting to or from campus, grabbing a coffee, etc. We ask that you wear your button and lanyard throughout the first week of classes so that you'll be easily recognizable as an ASK Me Ambassador.  This option is only available to staff or faculty members. (no in-person training required).

Interested in this option? Click on the button below and complete the form to get both your ASK ME button and welcome lanyard.

You will receive an email when your welcome package is available for pick up at the RED Zone kiosk in Vari Hall or in the main lobby of the Bennett Centre for Student Services.

2. Volunteer for an ASK Me Booth Shift!

Volunteer at an ASK Me booth and support new students in helping them find their way during the first few days of classes.

We are offering two training sessions to choose from:

  • Monday Dec 3 from 11:30am to 1pm -  Room 109 (Harry Crowe Room) , Atkinson College

or

  • Thursday Dec 6 from 11:30am to 1pm -  Room 305 (Senior Common Room), Founders College

*Lunch will be provided.

Volunteering will take place on Jan 3, 4 and 7. You will get to sign-up for a shift of your choice, once you complete the training.

Interested in this option? Click on the button below and complete the form to sign up for training and officially join the ASK ME Ambassador community.

More information about scheduling your shifts, etc. will be sent your way soon!

FAQ

How long are the volunteering shifts? Will I be able to skip work to participate?

The shifts are approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. We are working towards creating a culture of caring at York University. This is a work-related opportunity that can benefit the community and serve thousands of students transitioning into their new term. We suggest speaking to your supervisor of your area to participate in this opportunity.

What kind of training will be provided for volunteers? Is it required?

If you choose the booth option, you will get specific training on how to give directions and connect students to key campus partners and resources they will need. Volunteers will be stationed at indoor “ASK Me” booths around campus. We are providing two training dates on Dec 3 and Dec 6 from 11:30am-1pm. Lunch is provided. Location will be confirmed. Training is mandatory.

Can a student be a volunteer for the ASK Me Campaign?

We encourage upper year students (third year and up) to volunteer for the booth shifts. This can count towards your co-curricular activity hours. You will have an opportunity to act as peer mentors to students by helping them navigate around the campus.
